Make a Chocolate Spider Web Cake for Halloween

Spider Web Cake Ingredients

One pkg. Chocolate Cake Mix

One Can Prepared White Frosting OR
(1/2 cup white chocolate chips & 1/2 tsp. shortening)

Butter knife or Wooden Pick

For Spiders:

Large Black Gumdrop & Black Licorice Whips

OR

Peppermint patty & Red Licorice Whips

OR

Chocolate Doughnut Hole & Black Pipe Cleaners

Making the Cake:

Bake the cake according to package directions. Let cool and remove both layers from pans.

Place first layer upside down on cake plate or cake board. Frost top of cake and place second layer right side up. Frost entire cake with chocolate frosting.

Making the Spider Web:

Using white frosting, make 4 to 5 concentric circles from the center of the cake outward, starting small and ending about 1 inch from the cake's edge. It should look like you've drawn a bull's eye on the top of your cake.

Now draw a butter knife or wooden pick carefully from the cake center outward like the spokes of a wheel. This will pull the white frosting to resemble a real spider web. About 8 lines will make an authentic-looking web.

Spider Web White Frosting Alternative:

Place 1/2 cup white chips and 1/2 teaspoon shortening (do not use butter, margarine, oil or spread) in small, heavy zipper-close plastic bag. Microwave at High 45 seconds.

Squeeze gently until all the chips are melted. Microwave an additional 10 to 15 seconds if needed. Make a small cut in bottom corner of bag; squeeze mixture onto cake as directed above.

Making the Spiders:

Gumdrop Spider: Cut 6 one inches pieces of the black licorice whip. Poke 3 holes on each side of a large black gumdrop and insert licorice "legs". Plop the spider on your wonderful web cake.

Mint Patty Spider: Cut 6 one inch pieces of the red licorice whip. Place a small mint patty on your cake, pressing slightly into the frosting to hold. Add 3 red licorice pieces to each side of the mint patty. Pipe a little reserved white frosting onto the mint patty for eyes.

Doughnut Hole Spider: Cut 6 one inch pieces of black pipecleaner. Form each one into a rounded "L" shape. Insert 3 pipecleaner pieces into each side of a chocolate doughnut hole. Place spider on your cake.

Cake Design Variation:

Instead of chocolate cake, bake a pumpkin spice cake, white or yellow cake. Color white frosting with orange food coloring. Simply add red and yellow food coloring to the white frosting a drop at a time until you have a nice deep shade of orange. Make the spider web with black decorating gel for a completely differently and unique cake presentation.

Making Videos For Your Website

One of the best ways to building an online persona is to make a series of videos. When trying to establish yourself online, you want people to trust you when it comes to purchasing your products or services.

It is important to have a plan of distribution of these videos. YouTube is one of the best places to submit your stuff. You want to make sure you title the video with one of your keywords in it so that people will find you.

When I choose my title for my video, I take my time and do my research because this is how people are going to find you. People forget to put a hyperlink URL in the description back to their website so that people can find you. They also forget to put the URL in the video itself so that people will know where to go to find you.

All of these things really make up the difference. So I put all my energy on YouTube then I use an online provider to distribute my videos to different places. What I am doing is trying to spread the word about me as much as possible.

Audio is another way that people can find you when you're building up who you are. I focus on iTunes for distribution. There are some online talk shows that you can find to put up your own radio show which will help you. Just do a search for online talk shows.

What I'm doing is getting the word out about myself though as many means as possible. I'm trying to connect with people that might be looking for the stuff that I have to sell.

You can't forget about tweeting. That is always a good thing to do. I try and link everything together. For those people who follow me, I want to make sure I give them my contact information. You can have some people watch you through their cell phones with other kinds of social media. What I'm doing is building up my social media presents and I want to be there if someone wants to contact me for some reason.

On my website I optimize for the keywords, making sure everything is in the right section. I link back to my website with all of my social media presentations as well.

I do other things as well. I encourage people to link back to my site to the interviews so people can find out more about me. I also do guest postings on other peoples blogs. I do offline marketing and send out postcards and I use a web based voice broadcasting service to keep track of my clients through the phone. I'll call them up and let them know about some new videos I have.

Regardless of how secure a host might say a web app to be, the matter of the fact stands that the security risk of running an application on the internet is more significant than that running on a standalone desktop computer.

Many corporate web apps, on the other hand, use a subscription model where users are typically charged monthly service fee to operate the software.

5. Internet Connectivity - Web applications rely on persistent, unmanaged connectivity. Critical applications or businesses that are time sensitive cannot risk denial of service attacks or power outages to interrupt their operations.

6. Performance - Web applications may operate slower. The speed may also vary based on how many users are accessing the application.

7. Backups & Ownership - Regardless of the platform, companies need to be sure that their data is appropriately backed up. When using a web application that are hosted by a third party, companies should clearly determine who owns the data housed in the application and be sure that privacy policies prevent that data from being used by the web host.

It is easy to understand now why web applications that relate to the internet would prosper, while business applications may have less appeal in a web environment.

I believe that security concerns and legacy systems will still prevent the obsolescence of desktop software packages. Design & Functional Elements of Web 2.0

In W3C's Web 1.0 standard, a small sector of specialised individuals created content for a large number of companies and people. For instance, anything graphics related would take users to Adobe.com, CNN.com for news and Microsoft.com to address Windows-related problems. However, as resources in the form of blogs, RSS feeds, etc became available to the public, the amount of information published to the web increased. As a result, the W3C developed a new standard - Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 allows data to be split into microcontent and then split over various domains. Examples include RSS, Google Maps and social bookmarking tagging websites. Interfaces like these are changing the way we store, access and share information and it has ceased to matter which domain the source is coming from.

Naturally, this holds huge interface changes for designers since interfaces now need to be constructed keeping the amount of information being "out sourced" across multiple domains, in mind. Think of it as a platform for content, and with that in mind it becomes easy to see how design will change. An interface can now be constructed with stores of information coming from widely different sources - companies, individuals and governments and presenting them in a way that could never be done on a single domain.

Take Amazon.com for instance. They have created an interface (Amazon Light) which allows users to change the standard interface according to personal preference by making its database publically accessible.

There are a few design trends and functions that now need to be implemented for a Web 2.0 website.

Transitioning to XML

One of the biggest transitions to Web 2.0 is realising the transfer to a semantic markup like XML, ie better being able to describe content. Although HTML and XHTML do the job marginally well, descriptions are limited to pre-existing, pre-defined syntax such as headers, listings, paragraphs, citations and definitions and there is no other way to describe the content of most documents. Sure, you can limitedly define the content of simple documents, but we're not talking about simple documents here, are we? With Web 2.0, not only is this possible but it's critical to accesssibility.

With non-Web 2.0 websites, you are forced to scroll down manually looking for which content is new and what you've already seen before. RSS, an XML format allows users flexible accessibility features by allowing them to subscribe to (participating) websites' feeds by typing the URI into an aggregator. The primary disadvantage to this of course, is that users will no longer be able to identify what material is where considering the fact that websites are now dependant on content, the link might be anywhere. However, developers have found a way around this situation by tracking what content is most viewed by users, and they can place links to it in a more publically accessible and easily navigable place.

Users & Metadata

More power to the public is the tagline of the new Web 2.0 standard which now allows content to have metadata not according to the designers' specifications but by the users' own experiences thanks to sites like Flickr, de.licio.us and other social bookmarking websites.

There is now an increased chance that content will be more accurately described, tagged and referenced.

A Shift towards Programming

There is now a clear separation between structure and style which donates an emphasis from the visual to the information itself. This is a key paradigm shift as now developers are writing content more attuned for machines as opposed to people.

What this means for designers as hinted above, is to now start marketing content more effectively. They now need to get familiar and comfortable with web services and syndication (e.g RSS), in effect start pragmatically thinking much along the lines of developers.

The potentials that Web 2.0 brings with it are huge, true but there are certain design and functional considerations to adopt. So before you decide to jump in and move with the flow, understand the key concepts first so you don't live to regret your decision later.

Most people don't know how to promote their website by using the Web 2.0 method. When I begin to promote a website, I social bookmark to get backlinks. Then I'll set up my Web 2.0 properties.

Let's say you're targeting a certain particular keyword and it has an average competition profile. Depending on how strong the keyword competition is, social bookmarking might be the only tool you'll need to market your new site.

I use the Web 2.0 methods when the competition for the keyword is high. What you want to do is start to create a network of related sites on other domains that will link back to your site. I use an excel spreadsheet to keep track of all the URLs that link to a certain keyword and then I will link to each of the different Web 2.0 to different articles.

Eventually you'll have a whole bunch of pages that are optimized for certain keywords in your niche in addition to the main keyword you are targeting on your main website. Blogs are the best websites to promote so make sure that you have a blog attached to the product or service you are promoting. Search engine spiders love blogs.

Every time you create a Web 2.0 property, you'll want to submit that URL to your bookmarking network as well. If you're doing everything manually, you'd bookmark every single article you put up on your Web 2.0 network. On your blog Web 2.0 property, you'll want to make sure you add a good ping list. This is useful when you're learning how to promote your site. The last thing you don't want to over look is the RSS feed. Then the feeds are submitted to the RSS aggregators and directories.

Now you know a few tips and tricks to promote your website. Don't underestimate these simple steps. They might seem like things that can be overlooked, but shouldn't be.

I checked the Adobe help and followed the instructions of selecting the Type tool, select the layer and then click in the existing text area to edit. It keeps creating a new freakin' layer. What am I missing? I'm so tired of futzing with this. There's times when I click in the text and it activates where I can go ahead and make changes. Why is this so random? I'm sure it's some trick that photoshop users from years ago know automatically. HELP!

It really is EASY - if only the instructions were. :)

Open Photoshop. Open the PSD document that you want to edit. Click on the 'T' icon in the left side bar (that is the text icon). If the toolbar is not on the left side, click on the tab at the top called 'Windows' and check 'Tools' and it will appear.

Now, move your cursor over the text area that you want to edit and 'right click' and it will be highlighted. Now you start typing the text. You can also move this text around by moving the cursor just below the text until an arrow with crosshairs appears. Right click and move your mouse until you have the text where you want it. Then left click and it is now moved.
