How to Find Free Police Records Online

The fact is that you live in a big world. And it is quite impossible for you to get to know all the people you are dealing and working with. Just the same, it is very important to try your best in finding out all that you can about these people, especially if they work for you, or if you are establishing close personal relationships with them.

Perhaps one of the best ways to get to know someone is by running a check on his criminal history. Of course, you would want it clean, but you would be surprised to know that a lot of people keep a lot of deep, dark secrets. You just have to be on your guard every time.

You need not go to a police station to wade through their voluminous records. This could be a hassle for you, and could be time-consuming as well. Your remedy lies in the form of the Internet. At present, there are a lot of websites that offer access to police records.

Be wary of sex offenders
Family Watchdog is a site that offers access to a national database of registered sex offenders. Pay particular attention to this since there have been a lot of incidences when sex offenders and pedophiles stalk their victims while in the guise of holding small-town jobs. Not only will you be protecting yourself and your children, you will be helping protect your community as well.

Do not snub online court records
Courts nowadays are employing technology to serve more people. In fact, you can check if your local district and circuit courts have uploaded court decisions in their websites for your free perusal. Use the search function in the court website, and chances are you will be directed to the case decision involving the person you are checking on, if any court decision has been decided against him or in his favor.

Research on other search engines
Since people started paying more attention to the importance of conducting background checks on people, specifically if they hold police records, more and more companies have put up websites where you can find them. Make sure to check on the reputation of these companies before you engage their services, especially if they require a fee.

Find the most practical solution
Also, it would be good for you to know that some of these websites, while offering free access to police records, have dubious reputation. The information they offer you might not have been obtained in a legitimate manner. Some websites are also difficult to navigate, owing to the lengthy information they contain. Some website are simply fake -- they charge your credit card but do not provide access to any records in return.

A more practical, convenient and safe method to search for police records would be to get access to a nationwide registry of police records. Sure, you would have to pay a small fee. But the peace of mind that you will be getting in return is certainly worth the minimal number of pennies you will pay.

5 Steps to Building a Successful Team

There is a 5-step process that we have found to be very effective in building effective teams.

Before we start, it's important to remember that teams exist for one reason: to achieve results! However, it's also important to remember that teams must be sustainable in order to continue producing those results, so that's why we look at the inter-relationships among the team members -- to ensure that those relationships are working at the level needed for the team to continue producing results without getting burned out. Let's look at this process of building a successful team so that your team can get to the next level and be not only effective, but sustainable, in achieving its desired results.

1. Measure the current effectiveness of your team

In order to help your team be more successful, it's important to first look at how successful the team is currently. Measuring your team can serve as a benchmark for team development, as it gives you a current evaluation of your team as it exists today. The best way to do this is to measure your team's effectiveness, which can be done in several different ways:

- Personal interviews: Asking each team member a specific set of questions designed to measure their effectiveness is a great way to learn about what's really going on within your team. The disadvantage of this method is that some team members will not be forthcoming with information during face-to-face interviews because they are not anonymous. Results are best yielded when the interviews are done by an external facilitator who will maintain individual confidentiality.

- Simple measurement: A very simple method to use is to ask your team members "on a scale of 1 to 10, how effective is this team"? And see what their responses are so that you can ask some follow up questions to learn more about their perceptions.

- Assessment tool: In our opinion, this is the best method to measure the current state of your team because it is anonymous, unbiased and team members are generally very candid and open in their responses. The assessment results are then shared with your team in a specially-designed team development process that includes exercises to help the team improve in areas needed.

2. Create your vision of a highly successful team

This is where you can use the "begin with the end in mind" concept that Stephen Covey and others have used for years. This step is about using your imagination to create the most successful, productive, cohesive team that you desire! The vision of your team can include the following components:

- Team's values, priorities and desired results

- Organization's values, priorities and desired results for this team

- Your own values, priorities and desired results for this team

- Productivity factors: these are factors defined by Team Diagnostic International as the factors that support the team in achieving results, accomplishing tasks, staying on course to reach goals and objectives. They include strengths such as accountability, decision making, goal setting, etc.

- Positivity factors: these are factors defined by Team Diagnostic International as the factors that focus on the inter-relationships between team members and the spirit or tone of the team as a system. They include strengths such as trust, respect, clear communication, handling conflict, camaraderie, etc.

I encourage you to create your "desired team" vision with your team. Schedule a time to meet with them to allow for everyone to participate in this creative process! And, remember to think out of the box -- what would it look like to have a team that was achieving results beyond what you think is possible today?

3. Communicate effectively

This is a huge topic that I will only be able to scratch the surface in this article! However, here are the most important tips to remember in my experience of working with teams:

- Everyone receives information differently. Some people have to see it, others have to hear it, etc. How do you like to receive information? Remember that just because one way works for you, that same way doesn't work for all of your team members.

- Find out how each person needs to receive information in order to process it. Ask your team members "how do you like to receive information?" so that they can tell you whether they are visual learners, auditory learners, etc.

- Remember to communicate important information using several different methods so that all of your team members will receive the information you are trying to convey.

- Check in with your team regarding your communications and ask them how you can improve.

4. Develop a plan to turn your team vision into reality

Now that you've measure your team's current effectiveness, you've created a vision of your desired team and you've determined how to best communicate with them, it's time to create an action plan!

This step is about creating goals that support you in growing your team to the next level. We do complete workshops on effective goal setting and don't have space here to go into all of the details, but here are the basics:

Remember to set goals that are

- Specific

- Measurable

- Attainable

- Realistic

- Time oriented (make sure each goal has a deadline!)

5. Take a stand for your team!

Whether you see yourself as "the leader" of your team or "a leader" of your team or "a member" of your team, you are in a position to influence your team. Take a stand for the improvement of your team! Here are a couple of ways that you can do that:

- Remind your team members of the vision you see for your team and what you see as being possible for your team. Remind them that it IS possible to grow to the next level! And, ask them what they need to grow to the next possible.

- Look for ways to build and develop your team. When was the last time your team had a meeting that was dedicated to enhancing your team's relationships? When was the last time that your team went out to lunch together, or did another fun activity? If you aren't familiar with the types of team development that be effective for your team, or if you don't have the time or expertise to develop a program, call in an expert to help you create a program for your team.

Investing time, energy and financial resources in your team can be simple -- it doesn't have to be complicated or time consuming. The important thing is that you do something on a regular basis to keep your team motivated, engaged and productive so that they can produce the results that you and your organization desire!

Wood Furniture - What Type Of Wood Is Best?

There is a large selection of oaks, pines and hardwoods to construct furniture out of, and with the addition of hybrids and other genetically engineered lumber, it is getting harder to determine what type of wood your furniture is made out of. This article will give you clues on how to determine what type of furniture you prefer and what wood is best for certain types of furniture units.

Mahogany

The classic-designed Greene & Greene furniture is usually constructed from solid mahogany. This type of wood usually has a straight grain and bears a reddish-brown color that darkens over time. Mahogany is very durable and is many times used in the construction of boats; it is also among the most expensive types of wood. There is one type of mahogany that is of inferior quality known as Philippine mahogany; this wood is inexpensive, soft, and not very durable. The only acceptable form of this wood would be when it is used as a top, decorative layer on plywood.

White Oak

Authentic Mission style furniture is constructed from solid quarter sawn White Oak. White Oak is known as being "barrel tight" because of the fiber that grows within the tree that makes it strong enough to prevent leaking (for example) through a barrel. Other reliable solid oak includes Siberian oak and American Red Oak. The unique specks that make quarter sawn oak so valuable are actually protein that run perpendicular to growth rings on a lumber log. This protein makes the wood stronger as well as gives it a distinctive aesthetic. The most productive craftsmen, the Amish, hand pick the lumber to go into a unit and the parts that are left over are many times used for drawer sides.

Cedar

Most recently, however, drawers are constructed from aromatic cedar, which has its benefits. Cedar repels moths and is aesthetically beautiful besides the fresh smell it leaves behind. After years of use however, cedar is known to oxidize and the smell wears off but can be revitalized by sanding the cedar. Nevertheless for the most durable drawers, hardwood construction is the best.

Hardwood

While you can get the most use from furniture with solid tops because they will last longer and can absorb finishes easier, hardwood constructed furniture or furniture with veneer tops can visually take on any style because they are available in a variety of stains, particularly darker ones. For example, the Barn Furniture Mart offers birch, cherry, and maple, both hardwoods in cappuccino and cherry finishes. Hardwoods come from trees that are available all year long.

While many people think softwood is the complete opposite of hardwood, there are many overlapping characteristics. Hardwood is generally harder than softwood, but many are actually softer than softwood. Balsa is a type of hardwood that's actually softer than pine and there's yew that's an example of a hard softwood. Softwood comes from trees that are conifers (needle-bearing) and include pine, cedar, and spruce.

Pine

Pine is a beautiful softwood known mostly for its attractive knots, but knots are actually signs of weakness in the wood. Nevertheless, a pine knot is stronger than a knot in oak furniture, which would probably fall out. To make sure the knot in your furniture isn't going to eventually fall out, a good test is to scratch around the edge of it. Pine is perfect for achieving a rustic look in your home, and it's usually the knots that add to its beauty but recently pine farmers are growing pine without knots. These genetically engineered trees are being farmed to grow fast and to grow without low branches (because that is where the knots come from.)

Rubberwood

Rubberwood was discovered during the 16th century in Brazil however tree farms were started in Thailand and China. The sap from the tree has been used for many things from tires to condoms. Rubberwood features a nice grain and is widely used in to the furniture from Vietnam, Thailand and China. This type of wood is farmed, therefore is renewable and is durable. Its quality is comparable to oak as it is stronger than some hardwoods.

Plywood

Plywood is often used in modern furniture as well. It is a panel made up of multiple layers sometimes including particle wood and solid wood. The layers are not very thick, only about a few millimeters and they are layered in different directions to make it stronger. Plywood is also very good as sides on a drawer because of its sturdiness and is usually pretty inexpensive.

Veneers

Lastly, although usually frowned upon, veneer is not as bad as it is made out to be. It is great for pieces that won't get much use and can be very good-looking. Many times what causes veneer to be of poor quality is the construction of it. It is recommended to purchase furniture that does not require assembly. If you notice that the furniture is constructed of veneer and only features that decorative layer of veneer on one side, be prepared to not have that piece for very long. When moisture is absorbed by wood unevenly on one side only, it will swell and the board will warp. Even solid wood needs to be finished on both sides to prevent warping.

Top 10 Meeting Ice Breakers

Getting people comfortable in a group setting before a team meeting can be the best investment of ten to 15 minutes of time that you can make. Ice breakers get creative juices flowing, can increase the exchange of ideas, establish team identity, and create a sense of community. All of these items are important in forging top productive teams. But how do you get people to participate and not feel uncomfortable with an ice breaker?

For meetings in a business setting in which participants are professionals, ice breakers that require actions not normally associated with day-to-day behaviors in the office generally make people uncomfortable. Successful ice breakers for these type of groups generally consist of having attendees share memorable information with each other, create innovative ways to get people to introduce themselves to each other, or have group members collectively work on a problem where everyone has to contribute.

We've selected our top ten team meeting ice breakers that are sure to get your meeting participants relaxed and ready to focus on your agenda as well as to connect with others in the group.

1. Brainstorm!:Break the meeting into teams of four or five. Give each team a topic. Pick topics that are fun and simple like, "What would you take on a trip to the desert?" or "List things that are purple". Give your teams two minutes, no more, and tell them "This is a contest and the team with the most items on their list wins." Encourage the teams to write down as many things as they can and not to discuss anything, just list things as quickly as possible. At the end of two minutes, the team with the most items on their list wins! This helps people to share ideas without fearing what other people will think.

2. Same or Different:

Divide the meeting into teams of three or four and give each team a large sheet of paper and then give each person a different colored marker. Have each person draw a large oval such that each oval overlaps with the other ovals in the center of the piece of paper. Give the group or groups, a theme that pertains to your meeting objectives. Ask the participants to write down at least five or more entries in the non-overlapping and mutually overlapping areas of their ovals. Give them five minutes, no more than that, to talk about their similarities and differences and write them in their own ovals on the paper. If there is more than one group, compare results and identify common themes in both parts of the diagrams and what light these similarities and differences shed on the purpose of the meeting. This helps team members develop an understanding of shared objectives and in a non-confrontational way learn how their views differ from others in the group.

3. Fact or Fiction:

Have everyone write down three surprising things about themselves, two of which are true, and one of which is made up. Each person, in turn, reads their list and then the rest of the group votes on which "fact" they feel is the "false" one. If the group does not correctly pick a person's made up "fact", then that person wins. A group can have more than one winner. At the end, the whole group votes on which of the "winners" of the final round, had the most deceiving "fact". This helps people get to know and remember their colleagues.

4. Free Association:

The object of this ice breaker is to have small groups generate as many words or phrases as they can that are related to a particular topic that focuses on the objective of your meeting. Give the group or groups a key word you want them to associate with and then give them two minutes to list, as quickly as possible, as many words or thoughts that pop into their heads. For example, if your company is trying to decide on whether to reduce travel and increase the use of teleconferencing, you might use the word "teleconferencing" and have people list as many words or phrases they can that they associate with the key word. For example they might say: "saves money", "saves time", "impersonal", "need to see other people", "get distracted", "sound quality".... This reveals what people are thinking, similarities in viewpoints, and possibly even problem areas or topics that need addressing or further discussion.

5. Nametags:

Prepare nametags for each person and put them in a box. As people walk into the room, each person picks a nametag (not their own). When everyone is present, participants are told to find the person whose nametag they drew and introduce and say a few interesting things about themselves. When everyone has their own nametag, each person in the group will introduce the person whose nametag they were initially given and mention something of interest about that person. This helps participants get to know and remember each other.

6. Desert Island:

Group people in teams of five or six and tell them they will be marooned on a desert island. Give them 30 seconds to list all the things they think they should take and each person has to contribute at least three items. At the end of 30 seconds, tell the teams they can only take three things. Have the person who suggested each item on the list tell why they suggested it and defend why their item should be one of the chosen three. This helps the team learn about how each of them thinks, get to know each other's values, and how they solve problems.

7. Commonality Plus:

Group your meeting participants at tables. At each table ask the group to list ten ways that everyone in that group is similar. Let them know that they cannot list body parts or clothing and that what they select cannot have anything to do with work. One person at the table should be tasked to make their list. At the end of your time limit have the group share their list with all meeting members. This is a great opportunity for your meeting attendees to learn about each other's hobbies, families, and common interests.

8. Line Up:

As people enter your meeting hand each one a piece of paper with a different number written on it. Ask the group to arrange themselves in numeric order without using their voices, hands, or showing their number. This helps the team to think of other ways to communicate with each other and to work together to achieve a common goal.

9. Meet and Greet Shoe Pile:

This works great in large groups and is a variation of the name tag ice breaker. Have everyone take off one of their shoes and throw it into a pile. Have each group member pick up a shoe and walk around the meeting room greeting other people as they try to match their selected shoe to the one another team member is wearing. This is a great way for new people to meet several members in a group.

10. First or Worst:

What Makes a Good Website?

What makes a good website and what makes a bad one? There are many different aspects to a website that when combined, will make a dictionary definition of a good website. Some aspects of considering a website "good" is opinion based such as the appearance and graphics used within the site. People have different tastes, much like with homes, if everyone liked the same colors and themes, we would live in a very boring world. Appearance is only a small portion of what makes a good website, additional factors include content, usability and structure.

Content and site purpose: So you want a site or already have one, what is the purpose of your site and what do you want to accomplish? Before starting or continuing with your site, you need to set objectives and how you want visitors to benefit from using your site. The content of your site should always be kept up to date and reflect the main goal of your website. If your site's objective is to sell computers, you obviously don't want to write about how to change a tire.

Appearance: Appearance and the colors used strike an emotional reaction which can be used to make people feel a different way such as to buy. Different colors evoke different feelings. The psychology of colors is time proven and used by professional web designers to manipulate different messages to the users. A design should never be overly complex and confusing and the design should reflect the business and the service or product that you have to offer.

Usability: A website should be easy and intuitive to use, the navigation should be easily accessed on every page of your site. You never need to click more than 4 times to go to a specific page, a general rule of thumb is 2 or less clicks should get you to any page of the site. Complicated navigation structure will quickly frustrate your visitors and they will bounce quickly if they can't find what they are looking for.

Site Structure: This aspect cannot be seen by your visitors but is crucial to having a good website. The foundation of your site lies within the coding and programming structure. A solid site should be openly usable in all browsers, all screen size, all operating systems and without additional plugins such as Flash. Large amounts of potential customers can be lost if your website isn't compatible with different systems.

ISP: Your service provider (host) is also extremely valuable in a good website. Your host should have great uptime (99.9%+) and boast fast transfer speeds. When was the last time you stuck around for a site that took more than a minute to load?

Marketing: A good site should at least promote a good SEO practice and rank well within the major search engines.
Combine those key aspects and you will have a good website and if you ever need help with ensuring that you have a good website, Revived Media is always here to help.

A Review of Yahoo! Small Business Web Hosting

Yahoo! is the undisputed number one destination on the Internet with more than 379 million monthly users worldwide. If you are looking for web hosting services for your business you might be well advised to consider the fact that Yahoo! is home to more than 30 million web sites and that they manage over 50 terabytes of data. It is easier than you may think to get all the advantages of reliability, performance, and search engine popularity that comes from being at the top of the Internet.

Yahoo! Small Business offers three virtual web hosting plans for small business. They are: (1) starter (2) standard and (3) professional. Each plan provides a free domain name with no renewal fees for as long as you host with Yahoo! The starter plan is offered beginning at $8.96 per month and that includes 5 gigabytes of disk space, 200 gigabytes of monthly transfer, and 200 email addresses. The standard plan is offered starting at $14.96 per month and it provides 10 gigabytes of disk space, 400 gigabytes of monthly data transfer, and 500 email accounts. The professional plan is offered starting at $26.96 per month and it provides 20 gigabytes of disk space, 500 gigabytes of monthly data transfer, and 1,000 email addresses. Yahoo! Small Business is especially competitive if you are developing a new business web site because they do not require a long-term contract but allow you to rent their service on a month to month basis.

If you are new to building websites Yahoo! Small Business provides a free software package called Yahoo! SiteBuilder that was designed to make web site creation easy. This is software that you download to your Windows operating system. For this review we downloaded version 2.3.1 along with 380+ templates and more than 3,400 images that can be used to develop a multi-page web site without the need to know the web programming language HyperText Markup Language (HTML). The software comes with handy tutorials to help guide you through every development activity. Yahoo! Small Business shows off several business quality web sites that have been developed using these templates. However, if you prefer to use a professional web development system such as Adobe Dreamweaver you will find Yahoo! Small Business web hosting fully accommodating of cool technologies like Flash and Fireworks.

Virtually unlimited MySQL database support is another reason that sets Yahoo! Small Business services above the others. With virtually unlimited databases you can add lots of advanced features to your web site including: customer databases for use with electronic commerce, blogging, interactive message boards, and other database driven content management applications like phpNuke. Yahoo! Small Business provides scripting tools like PHP and Perl that make advanced database programming a snap.

Yahoo! Small Business web hosting accounts come with a $100 Yahoo! Search Marketing credit and a $50 Google AdWords credit. Your business web site will need these advertising services and this provides a great opportunity to learn valuable skills that you will use over and over again.

Yahoo! performance is monitored by Netcraft and free reports are updated every 15 minutes so you can always check to make sure you are getting outstanding service. The reports provide data on four performance parameters: (1) first byte (2) connect (3) DNS and (4) total. Our review did uncover a small number of user complaints that the speed of web pages transferred from Yahoo! was slow. Further investigation did reveal performance numbers that were somewhat less than expected. However, properly designed and optimized pages should operate well within the performance range expected by the majority of users.

Management of your web site at Yahoo! is a breeze because of their web hosting control panel. Everything from setting up email accounts, obtaining monthly web site statistics, to web site development and maintenance can be easily controlled using one standardized interface. Yahoo! allows you to have control over your own DNS so you can modify MX, A, and CNAME records. Yahoo! has the best email service on the Internet providing each mailbox with 2 GB of storage space. Yahoo! spam controls can't stop all junk mail but they do a great job that significantly reduces the volume that users have to deal with. Yahoo! allows the transfer of email messages with enormous 20 MB file attachments.

Yahoo! Small Business is an outstanding value and is highly recommended. This review is only an overview of the capabilities provided with Yahoo! Small Business web hosting accounts. A more detailed chart of Yahoo! features, in comparison with other web hosting providers, is available at iTechGuide.

Web Design Software Introduction

Web design software is a great way to design your website because it makes things so much simpler for you. With many types of web design software, you could build a functional website within minutes and then keep adding features to it to enhance its appeal.

Earlier, when website designers needed to build websites from scratch, web designing was quite a daunting affair, but today with the help of the several web design software applications available, it has become much easier to build and have websites.

A lot of commercial, as well as personal, users are building their websites themselves using these tools and you could do that easily too. In fact, there are even lots of free web design software packages available these days.

Website Design Software Features

Let us take a look at the features that design software applications must typically have.

1. The WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") web building applications are considered by far to be the best web design software for a beginning developer. These tools are convenient because when you use them, what you see is what you get (hence the name).

If you are a novice, these tools could really help you because you are actually seeing your website taking shape as you add those individual features to it. Dreamweaver and FrontPage are two of the best and most popular WYSIWYG web design software tools available today.

2. Look for the basic features. You have to know that each web building software application has a different set of features to offer. Since all websites are also different, you will be better off using a software program that meets with your requirements.

For example, if you are making a product website that will have reviews, it will be a totally different ballgame than if you are planning a social networking website. A brief study of the features of the website will tell you what kind of web design program would be the best for it.

3. Remember that all of these applications have their own strengths and weaknesses. You could read their reviews beforehand to understand what these are. For example, some websites are better for navigability and some are better for the security that they provide. If your website does not have serious privacy issues, you could go for a website that provides better value-added features to the users such as better navigability.

4. Most of the website designing programs that you will use will also have options for you for the hosting of the website. If they have that, it would be a more suitable option for you because then you would save on costs and would have to deal with just one company rather than two of them. These are generally considered to be the best web design software companies out there on the Internet.

As in everything available on the Internet, there is a lot of competition in the world of web design software too, and it is not good to take things at their face value. You have to be discerning.

One of the best things you could do is to visit some online forums about web design software applications and read there the reviews from users and experts to know which of them will be best suited for your needs. Just looking at the features mentioned on the product websites would not be enough.

How to Create a Web Site Using Publisher

Publisher has a number of tools that allow you to make a web-site with ease. You can create a website with publisher even if you only make one page. You create it as a publisher publication, and then publish it to the web as HTML. You will not be able to edit it in publisher once it is published on the web. However, you can edit the publication, make any changes you need, and then publish the edited files onto the web again.

Firstly, choose new from the file menu and open the publisher window. Select web site as the publication type and then select a web-site design and any other changes that you feel necessary. When you have finished, click create. When the easy web site builder dialog box appears, tick any boxes for the items you want to add to the website and click ok.

Now you have begun creating your web-site in publisher, click page options to change the page layout, the page name, background and background sound. Doing so will make it look more appealing to anybody that views it.

Now use any tool on the web tools toolbar and customize your web page. If you have multiple pages, simply switch to other pages and customize them individually. You will need to replace the placeholder text and graphics on each page with your content.

When you have finished with this, click the save button and your publication will be saved and be available for any later modifications. When you have saved it, you can click the web page preview button on the web tools toolbar. In here you can preview your site in the web browser. Finally, return to your publication, make and changes, save it, and you are finished.

Creating a web-site is a very difficult task, but with publisher it becomes a lot easier. With practice, you will be able to make better web sites, by following this guide you can take the first steps to making established web sites.
